Amazon will invest over 5 billion dollars in infrastructure in Mexico

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced its plans to invest over 5 billion dollars in Mexico over the next 15 years. This stems from the company's strategy to build its first Infrastructure Region in the state of Querétaro, Mexico, by early 2025.

According to Amazon, the purpose of this project is to provide developers, startups, entrepreneurs, businesses, as well as governmental, educational, and non-profit organizations with advanced and secure cloud technologies to run their applications and serve end users from data centers located in Mexico, ensuring that customers who wish to store their content in the country can do so.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, emphasized that this investment in Mexico reflects the company's commitment to customers, enabling them to leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.

He added that Amazon Web Services customers focusing on high availability can design their applications to run across multiple Availability Zones to achieve even greater fault tolerance.

On her part, Mexico's Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, highlighted that "AWS's investment and expansion in Mexico represent a sign of confidence and demonstrate that the appropriate conditions exist to support the nearshoring trend in many sectors of our economy."

AWS Availability Zones The new Amazon infrastructure region in Mexico, called the AWS (Central) Region, will feature three zones hosting between one and three data centers, adding to the 105 AWS Availability Zones existing in 33 regions globally.

It is worth mentioning that Amazon plans to launch 15 more Availability Zones and five more AWS Regions in Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. AWS Regions consist of Availability Zones that place the infrastructure in different and independent geographical regions to support customers' business continuity, but close enough to provide low latency for high availability applications using multiple Availability Zones. Each Availability Zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security and is connected through redundant ultra-low-latency networks.

Economic boost and technological leadership Finally, Mauricio Kuri, Governor of the state of Querétaro, added that this investment positions the entity as a leader in Mexico's digital transformation and helps drive economic growth.

It should be noted that Amazon has been named the largest purchaser of renewable energy for the past four years, a position it has held since 2020, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, and has over 500 renewable energy projects in 27 countries.
